Roadworthy Guitar and Amp found its beginnings out of the frustration of a biologist and musician (the same person). In 1986, Biology graduate student David Baas began to learn to repair guitars. By 1988, his frustration with academia led him to not finish his PhD and begin a guitar repair business that, along with playing guitar, became his sole source of income. During the next three years, he heard many of his customers express the same frustrations he had experienced as a musician. People needed a player's shop. A guitar shop that specialized in helping guitar players get what they wanted and needed.
A shop that had a good inventory of player's instruments and amps. Things that were in good shape, that played well, that were priced reasonably and fairly. Things that the shop had checked out and brought into good playing condition if they needed it. Used and new merchandise that you could take out on a gig with confidence. A place that would take trades and trade fairly with a serious customer. A place that had a good selection of strings and accessories sold at reasonable prices. A place where you could get your gear fixed right, for a reasonable price in a reasonable amount of time. A place where you could learn about gear, either by talking to the staff or by just playing and checking out different stuff. A place where you could take your time and be comfortable with the buying decision you made. A place that stood behind what they sell. Dave decided he would open a guitar shop specifically to answer those needs.

In 1991, Dave opened Roadworthy Guitar and Amp at 2624 North Walnut, on the far north side of Bloomington's commercial district.
The business grew and flourished there and in 1996, the business was moved to its next location in the heart of downtown Bloomington at 124 East Kirkwood Avenue. In 2006, the store moved again to its present location at 115 S. Walnut Street, just south of the Monroe County courthouse. Roadworthy continues to try and meet the needs of working musicians as well as serve those who play at home, in church, or at an occasional gathering of friends and family. In addition, the folks at Roadworthy pride themselves on their great selection of guitars and amps for everyone from the professional to the first-time beginner. Above all, the philosophy at Roadworthy is that if our customer is not happy, then we haven't done our job. Your satisfaction is our number one concern. Check us out, we think you'll be pleased.
